Job Description :
** The News Department Executive Editor is responsible for ensuring production of timely, accurate, high-quality news publications for AAFP members, including AAFP News, the Academy’s official member news publication, social media outreach including various blogs, and Family Medicine SmartBrief.
** This position leads and directs operations of the News department, providing both strategic/long-term and short-term planning direction to ensure that member value is communicated appropriately.
** The Executive Editor is responsible for tracking reader response as well as trends in medicine and the larger world, and he or she forecasts/interprets what these trends will mean for family physicians, the AAFP and the publications.
** This person edits stories and blogs, directly supervises four employees, and is responsible for minimizing AAFP’s legal exposure to libel or breach-of-contract lawsuits and ensuring the integrity of the AAFP’s image.
** Possible 15 days travel annually.
** Others duties as assigned.
Required Experience :
** Education beyond a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or other related area or sufficient knowledge acquired through equivalent work experience, plus a minimum of ten years directly related work experience.
** Required skills include excellent supervisory, organizational and management skills; knowledge of physician issues;
** excellent research, writing, and editing skills for physician and consumer publications; knowledge of publishing processes and procedures; research skills (medical literature, Internet).
** Knowledge of libel, contract, copyright, employment and association law; postal regulations; and guidelines such as those of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
** Knowledge of publication management, including editorial and production processes;
** online publishing and Web technology;
** staff management; strategic planning; reader/user surveys; and quality improvement.
** Familiarity with the scope and nature of family medicine and the interests and information needs of family physicians.
** Strong interpersonal communication skills.
** Ability to meet multiple deadlines, to work independently and to work as a team member.
** Ability to think strategically, set and manage priorities and multiple projects, and allocate and reallocate resources.
** Demonstrated creativity, initiative and willingness to take risks. Strong leadership, organizational, managerial and supervisory skills.

Development Specialist :

Job Description :
** This position manages and implements the process for receiving, reporting and acknowledging all gifts/donations to the Foundation through Raiser’s Edge (fundraising software); maintains the department fundraising database which includes the ability to generate queries, reports, mailing lists and communications related to Foundation donors; coordinates fundraising special events, item sales, and Foundation exhibits; contributes to the development of Foundation communication/marketing collateral and website; and supports the Director, Development in activities related to budgeting, department management, and delivery of a broad range of fundraising initiatives to provide financial and strategic support of the AAFP Foundation.
** This position will serve as a point of contact for 55 state chapters/chapter foundations, facilitating meetings with internal staff and external stakeholders via conference call and face-to-face, and preparing necessary communications and materials as needed.
** Serves as staff support to the AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees Development Committee.
** Approximately 5-10 days travel annually.
** Other duties as assigned.
Required Experience :
** Bachelor’s degree or knowledge acquired through equivalent work experience, plus at least two years related experience.
** Experience in a not-for-profit organization (in a development/fundraising function) and special events expertise preferred.
** Strong computer skills in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Internet needed.
** Website content management software and specific fundraising software (such as Raiser’s Edge) preferred.
** Ability to compose effective correspondence, good math skills for assistance in analysis, budget and financial reporting, and database maintenance required.
** Candidates need to be flexible to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions; attention to detail; and excellent oral and written communication skills.
** Fundraising Certification or work toward certification a plus.
